Bernard Hendrix:

CLASS OF 1971
Statesboro, GA

Bernard's Story

I entered the Air Force in March, 1973. After I completed all of my training I came back to Statesboro where I was assigned until October, 1983. I didn't know, when I joined, that there was a radar site next to our little air port. While there I maintained and operated automatic tracking radar systems which were used to evaluate Air Force B52 Bomber and FB111 Fighter/Bomber crews. Although I was assigned primarily to the site in Statesboro, I traveled to several mid-western states on Temporary Duty Assignments (TDY) to perform the same duties at remote radar site locations. I was assigned to Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, VA, in October 1983 where I was assigned to the F-15 Flight Simulator section. I was in charge of the airmen who maintained and operated the simulator which provided training for the fighter wing pilots. Although not a pilot, I actually had the opportunity to fly an F-15 fighter jet. I was reassigned to Anderson, South Carolina in July, 1987 where I was a recruiter for the next 5 years, Boy...Expand for more
was that different. My final assignment was to Shaw AFB, South Carolina in July 1992 where I was in charge of the Fitness Center and, later, the Community Activities Center. Retired in 1994 and moved to Smyrna, GA. It was amazing that I spent 21 years and a few months in the Air Force and was never assigned overseas. I was employed by Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics in Atlanta, where we refurbished and repaired medical laboratory diagnostic equipment. Worked with that company as a senior technician and product engineer until the operation was relocated to Fort Mill, SC in 2014. Unfortunately, I lost my wife to cancer in February, 2014 and I decided not to relocate with the company. I moved back here in June, 2018 and am fully retired. In addition to my home projects, I make sure that my daughter and granddaughter, who moved back with me, are okay. Retirement has also given me the opportunity to really establish a relationship with God by having the time to really study the bible. And, that is the best benefit.
